We know, we know. One of the reasons why you are learning Italian is because you want to be ready when you visit Italy. Right?
And of course, when you visit Italy, one of the goals will be trying Italian food. In particular, you will want to experience “THE” pizza. Is that correct?
Well, we are here to help you! Because the question you are probably asking yourself now is: “Yes, thank you, but where can I find the best pizza in Italy?”
So, let’s start from the beginning. The word pizza was first documented in A.D. 997 in Gaeta, in the province of Latina, in Lazio, and successively in different parts of Central and Southern Italy.
Its precursor was “the focaccia”, a type of flatbread known to the Romans at first. The modern pizza was developed in Naples when someone had the brilliant idea to add tomato to that focaccia in the late 18th century.
A move we are all grateful to. And nowadays, the best modern pizza you can find in Italy is…in Campania!
According to “La Guida Pizzerie d’Italia 2020 di Gambero Rosso”, Franco Pepe, owner of the pizzeria “Pepe in Grani” in Caiazzo, in the province of Caserta, is the best pizzaiolo of Italy. He has been awarded for six years in a row, and his location is considered as a temple.
But, if the line to the temple is too long, we’ll give you alternative options. The second best pizzeria of Italy, always according to “La Guida”, is located in Erbusco, in the province of Brescia. It is surprising, isn’t it? We are in the north of Italy, here, not in the south as you probably expected, and the place is called La Filiale a L’Albereta.
Third place, if you are not tired of the first two pizzas, is Pizzeria La Notizia of Enzo Coccia. Where? In Naples, of course.
The list is long but the advice is always the same. If you are not able to try one of these three top-pizzerias while you are visiting Italy, don’t be worried. Pizza is part of our culture and every pizzeria with the wood-burning oven you’ll find in the city you are visiting will be a good experience.
And now that you are ready for pizza, maybe it is time to improve the language. Discover all our classes here! https://www.speakitalynyc.com/
